Unlike the neighbouring resorts of Hersonissos and Malia, Stalida is ideal for family seaside holidays. Stalida beach is a large, organised sandy beach lined with lots of tavernas and cafes. In the centre of Stalida you’ll find all you need for shopping and fun. Car hire bureaux offer safe, reasonably-priced cars for you to travel further afield and explore the beauties of
Crete. If you prefer the convenience of organised tours, you can choose the best for you from the local travel agents.
From Stalida it’s easy to visit Heraklion with its famous Archaeological Museum and the Minoan Palace of Knossos. Also, in nearby Malia is the Minoan Palace of Malia, the third most important Minoan palace in Crete. Malia is worth a visit for the picturesque alleys in the old quarter. Here you’ll find tavernas in which to try Cretan delicacies, while those who would rather party with their friends can enjoy the hopping nightlife in the dozens of bars in Malia and Hersonissos.
Lovers of traditional life and architecture will discover images of Cretan life in the villages of Mohos and Krasi and the Lassithi Plateau. If you visit the Lassithi Plateau, don’t miss Kera Monastery with its wonderful wall paintings. Another idea for a day trip from Stalida is the town of
Agios Nikolaos with its mysterious lake. It’s just half an hour’s drive from Stalida and from there you can continue on to Elounda, the classy resort patronised by prime ministers, famous artists and Arab princes. From Agios Nikolaos there are also boats to the islet of Spinalonga with its Venetian fortress, a leper colony until 50 years ago. Whatever your interests, remember that Stalida is ideally situated at the centre of the north coast of Crete, within easy reach of most of the island’s attractions and its best beaches.
